Smart Health Choices

As part of our commitment to ensuring that you, as caregivers, have access to the best information that you possibly can, we bring this fabulous gem to you.  Our job here at iNightingale is to scour the internet and bring everything back here so that you can use us as a resource for quality health care delivery information.  As caregivers, we hope to give you the skills you need to provide care, but knowledge is a deep well. As caregivers, the greater understanding that you have of your patient’s needs, condition and future means that you are able to make the best decisions for them and with them to provide them with a fulfilling life.

In keeping with that, we have recently discovered Smart Health Choices.  Professor Les Irwig, Judy Irwig, Dr Lyndall Trevanna & Melissa Sweet come together from varied backgrounds to provide guidance through the maze of healthcare decision making.  What could be more important in your life than making critical decisions about care and treatment options?  The patients and families that Phill and I encounter every day consistently describe their confusion, lack of knowledge and bewilderment.  They just do not feel ready to make the decisions at the crossroads that they constantly find themselves.

The four authors have put together a framework to guide you. One of our favourites are these 5 questions:

  1. What will happen if I wait and watch?
  2. What are my test and treatment options?
  3. What are the benefits and harms of these options?
  4. How do the benefits and harms weigh up for me?
  5. Do I have enough information to make a choice?

We love it.  But they step through a considerable more than that.  What is wonderful is that this little four are more than happy to give this book away for free – you’ve just got to spread the word.  They are that passionate about making sure that consumers have a path that they can follow.

What strategies do you use to make decisions in this world that is famous for jargon, high-tech equipment and systems that seems overwhelming?

Nic Nash-Arnold has been nursing for twenty years. She has nursed thousands of patients, mainly in the operating theatre. Nicole has worked in both public and private hospitals in Queensland. Ten years ago, she left the “coal face” of nursing and moved into a Nurse Educator role and then a series of senior and executive hospital administration roles. Nic has always believed in the empowerment with education. That might be empowering nurses to provide better care or patients to take better care, but education is always the centre of the solution. Google
