This vertebral column tutorial provides a great foundation for understanding the structure and function of the back.  If you are a carer at home and looking after a patient who has had spinal surgery, then this is essential viewing for you.  Understanding the components of the spine and those that were involved in your patient’s surgery will help you plan the best way for them to move and know what is safe and what is likely to be painful.  But, also, coming to grips with how to amazing structure works will help you protect your own back.  Manual Handling is an essential part of caregiving but it comes with some inherent risks.  If you do not know how to appropriately manoeuvre your patient and throw yourself into heavy lifting, your back simply won’t hold out.  This tutorial will give you some insight into why lower back pain is a target for poor lifting techniques.
